Carbon Steel Plate Grades Explained: A36, Q235, S235JR, SS400 — Which One to Choose?

If you buy steel plate regularly, you have probably seen four grade names more than any others: A36, Q235, S235JR and SS400. They look similar, and in many applications they are interchangeable — but they come from different standards, have different specified properties, and are not always equivalent.

This guide explains what each grade means, how they compare, and how to choose the right one for your project without over-specifying (and overpaying).

What the Grade Name Tells You

Steel grade names encode the standard they belong to and, usually, the minimum yield strength:

  • A36 — ASTM standard; minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi (about 250 MPa);
  • Q235 — Chinese GB standard; minimum yield strength of 235 MPa;
  • S235 — European EN 10025 standard; minimum yield strength of 235 MPa;
  • SS400 — Japanese JIS standard; a structural steel with guaranteed tensile strength of 400–510 MPa (yield is not the primary specified property).

So Q235, S235 and A36 all sit around the same 235–250 MPa yield level — the classic “general structural” range. SS400 is specified by tensile strength rather than yield, but in practice is used in the same applications.

The Four Grades at a Glance

Are They Interchangeable?

In most general structural applications — frames, brackets, base plates, gussets, simple welded assemblies — yes, these grades are functionally interchangeable. The yield strength is comparable, the weldability is good for all four, and the applications overlap heavily.

However, they are not identical:

  • Chemistry limits differ. S235JR and Q235B have more restrictive carbon and composition limits than SS400, which affects weldability and toughness in thicker sections.
  • Impact properties differ. The “JR” in S235JR denotes a guaranteed impact energy of 27 J at 20°C. A36 and Q235B do not always guarantee impact performance at the same level.
  • Testing and documentation differ. Each standard defines its own test methods and certificate requirements, which matters for projects with strict specification and inspection rules.

How to Choose the Right Grade

Choose by the project specification

The safest rule: use the grade your end client or project specification names. If the spec says ASTM A36, supply A36. If it says S235JR, supply S235JR. Substituting grades without approval is a common source of rejects and disputes — even when the substitute is technically equivalent.

Choose by application

  • Simple structural / non-critical: any of the four will work; select by availability and price.
  • Welded structures with demanding requirements: prefer S235JR or Q235B for better weldability and defined chemistry.
  • Export with third-party inspection: match the exact standard requested on the inspection order.
  • Thick plate: check the standard’s thickness-dependent property requirements — thicker plates need verification of yield, elongation and sometimes impact energy.

Choose by supply chain

Chinese suppliers hold large spot inventory of Q235B, and can usually also supply A36, S235JR and SS400 equivalents from the same plate with the required standard marking and certificate. If your supplier is in China, confirming which “equivalent” mapping they use is important — a Q235B plate can often be certified to multiple standard names, but the certificate must match the standard you actually require.

What About Higher-Strength Grades?

If your design needs more strength than 235–250 MPa, step up to the next family:

  • ASTM A572 Grade 50 / Q355B / S355JR — ~355 MPa yield, the common high-strength structural range;
  • A572 Grade 60 / Q460 — higher strength for heavier loads;
  • Wear-resistant and alloy plates — for abrasion, high pressure or low-temperature service (see our guide to wear resistant steel plate).

Upgrading from 235 MPa to 355 MPa plate lets engineers use thinner sections — saving weight and, often, total material cost on large structures.

Practical Buying Tips

  1. Always specify standard + grade + dimensions (e.g., “ASTM A36, 20mm × 2500mm × 12000mm”). A grade name alone is not a complete specification.
  2. Confirm the yield/strength requirement for your design, not just the grade name.
  3. Request the mill test certificate and check that the grade and standard match your order.
  4. Ask about equivalent supply — a good supplier will tell you honestly whether Q235B, A36 or S235JR is the most economical certified option for your project.
  5. Buy from a supplier with stock. Structural plate demand is rarely scheduled far ahead; spot inventory means you get the grade you need without waiting for a mill run.
