Steel Plate Quality Standards and Certifications: ASTM, EN, JIS and GB Explained

When you buy steel plate for an engineering project, the grade name on the quotation is only half the story. The other half is the standard that grade belongs to — and the certification that proves the material actually meets it.

A36, S235JR, Q235B, SS400, A516, P265GH — these are all common steel plate grades, but each belongs to a different standard system. This guide explains the major standards, what they mean, and how to verify quality before you place an order.

The Four Major Steel Standards

1. ASTM (USA)

The American Society for Testing and Materials standards are among the most widely used globally, especially for engineering and export projects.

  • ASTM A36 — general structural carbon steel plate, the default choice for simple structural applications;
  • ASTM A572 — high-strength low-alloy structural plate (Grade 50, Grade 60, etc.);
  • ASTM A516 — pressure vessel plate (Grades 55, 60, 65, 70) for moderate- and lower-temperature service;
  • ASTM A387 — chromium-molybdenum alloy plate for high-temperature pressure vessel service;
  • ASTM A514 — high-yield quenched and tempered alloy plate for heavy equipment.

2. EN (European)

European Norms are widely accepted internationally and required for many European and Middle Eastern projects.

  • EN 10025 S235JR / S275JR / S355JR — structural steel plate in a range of strength levels (S235 ≈ 235 MPa yield);
  • EN 10025-4 S355ML / S460ML — thermomechanically rolled plate for demanding structural use;
  • EN 10028 P265GH / P295GH / P355GH — pressure vessel plate for elevated-temperature service.

3. JIS (Japan)

Japanese Industrial Standards are common in Asia-Pacific projects and machinery exports.

  • SS400 — general structural rolled steel, roughly comparable to A36;
  • SM490 — structural plate for welded construction;
  • SUS304 / SUS316 — stainless steel plate grades.

4. GB (China)

Chinese national standards govern domestic production and are increasingly used in export supply chains.

  • Q235B — general carbon structural plate (Q = yield strength in MPa, ~235);
  • Q345B / Q355B — low-alloy high-strength structural plate;
  • Q460C / Q550D — higher-strength plates for heavy structures;
  • NM360 / NM400 / NM500 — wear-resistant (耐磨) plates with high hardness.

Which Standard Should You Specify?

The “right” standard depends on your project, end client and local regulations:

  • Projects with international engineering firms or export certification → ASTM or EN;
  • Equipment built to Asian machine standards → JIS;
  • Projects accepting Chinese mill supply with equivalent grades → GB (often the most cost-effective, especially for carbon structural plate).

Many suppliers can supply the same physical plate to multiple standard equivalents — for example Q235B, A36 and S235JR are all common low-strength structural plates with comparable properties. Always confirm the specific standard and grade in writing.

Key Certifications to Request

Mill Test Certificate (MTC / EN 10204 3.1)

The most important document. An MTC states the plate’s grade, standard, heat number, chemical composition and mechanical properties, and confirms it was produced to the specified standard.

Third-Party Inspection

For critical projects, buyers arrange independent inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, Intertek, etc.) to verify dimensions, surface quality, chemical composition and mechanical testing at the mill or warehouse.

Special Testing

Depending on the application, you may need:

  • Ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal soundness — common for pressure vessel plate;
  • Impact testing at low temperatures for cold-service grades;
  • Hardness testing for wear-resistant plate;
  • Mechanical testing — tensile, yield and elongation confirmation.

ISO / System Certificates

A supplier with ISO 9001 quality management certification demonstrates a controlled production and inspection process — a strong signal of reliability even though it is not a product certificate.

How to Verify a Supplier’s Quality

  1. Ask for the mill test certificate on every order — a reputable supplier provides it without hesitation.
  2. Confirm the standard and grade in writing on the commercial invoice and packing list.
  3. Request third-party inspection for pressure vessel, marine or safety-critical applications.
  4. Check the supplier’s factory — do they cut, process and inspect in-house? Integrated factories control quality at every step.
  5. Order a small trial batch before committing to a large volume contract.
